Safari Sudan
Day 1:
Drive from Khartoum to visit the ruins of the town, temples and necropolises of the former capital of the Meroe kingdom.
After lunch drive to Atbara and cross to the west bank of the Nile. Trace the path of the Nile wending northward through rural settlements on the lush west bank of the Nile. See traditional housing and village life.
Follow the Nile northward. Camp in desert.
Day 2:
After breakfast continue along the Nile. Pass through the famous El Kirbekan battle site where British led troops fought against the forces of the Mahdi in February 1885 in their effort to conquest Sudan. The landscape at this point is covered with magnificent boulders so the drive is slow.
Emerge into flat desert with soft sand and enjoy the open desert as we navigate to a camp site where we spend the night overlooking the hydro-dam project at the Fourth Cataract.
Day 3:
In the morning enjoy a guided tour around the hydro dam.Cross the bridge at Karima to visit Gebal Barkal and its museum, El Kurru and a petrified desert forest. Tour abandoned old Nile Steamers at Karima wharf and visit in the Bayuda desert the Ghazali monastery which was abandoned in the 11th century. Camp overnight in the Bayuda desert.
Day 4:
Drive through the vast expanse of the Bayuda desert. Rejoin the tarmac road at Atbarra to return to Khartoum.
